Before paying fees or filling an admission form, every student should check one thing: is the university on the HEC recognized universities list? The Higher Education Commission (HEC) is the regulator of degree-awarding institutions in Pakistan, and it only attests degrees from institutions it recognizes.
HEC Recognized Universities in Pakistan
HEC recognizes chartered public and private universities and degree awarding institutions, along with their approved campuses. In its public notice on recognized and illegal campuses, HEC refers to 247 recognized universities, and it publishes a separate directory of approved sub-campuses. At the time of writing, HEC’s campus page listed 147 approved campuses in total, 95 of public sector universities and 52 of private ones. Numbers change as charters are granted, so always confirm on the official site.
HEC Recognized Public Universities in Pakistan
Public sector universities are chartered by the federal or provincial governments. Well-known examples include Quaid-i-Azam University and COMSATS in Islamabad, the University of the Punjab in Lahore, the University of Karachi, and the University of Peshawar. Some, such as COMSATS and NUML, have approved campuses in several cities.
HEC Recognized Private Universities in Pakistan
Private universities also need a government charter. Examples include LUMS in Lahore, IBA in Karachi and GIKI in Topi. A private university is valid only in the way its charter and HEC listing allow, and some institutions chartered in one province have been warned for operating unlawfully in another.
HEC Recognized Universities by City in Pakistan
The main hubs are Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta and Multan. HEC lists each university with its main campus and website, so you can search by city. Remember that only campuses named on the HEC list are recognized, even if the university itself is.
