Gold Remains in Spotlight — Why Global Price Swings Matter So Much for Pakistan

Gold has become one of the most closely watched assets of 2026, with sharp movements in international prices having an immediate impact on buyers, investors and jewellery businesses in Pakistan.

After reaching extraordinary levels earlier this year, the international gold market has recently faced fresh pressure. On September 22, spot gold was trading around $4,325 per ounce, more than 22% below its January record high of $5,594.82. Higher U.S. interest rates, stronger Treasury yields and movements in the dollar have become major factors influencing the precious metal.

The impact is being felt directly in Pakistan.

On September 27, gold prices in Pakistan dropped by Rs2,100 to Rs450,936 per tola, while the price of 10 grams fell by Rs1,800 to Rs386,604, according to rates reported by the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association.

For Pakistani consumers, however, international gold prices are only part of the equation.

The local price of gold is also heavily influenced by the rupee-dollar exchange rate. This means that even when international gold becomes cheaper, Pakistani buyers may not always receive the same level of relief if the rupee weakens against the U.S. dollar.

This matters because gold is much more than an investment in Pakistan.

It remains deeply connected with weddings, family savings and traditional wealth preservation. When gold approaches or crosses extremely high levels per tola, families planning weddings can face significantly higher jewellery costs. Jewellery businesses can also feel the pressure as customers reduce purchases, choose lighter designs or delay buying altogether.

For investors, gold has traditionally been considered a safe-haven asset during periods of economic and geopolitical uncertainty. But 2026 has also demonstrated that gold does not move in only one direction. Interest-rate expectations, inflation, oil prices, the U.S. dollar and global conflicts can create major swings in both directions.

Pakistan therefore feels almost every major movement in the international bullion market.

For local buyers, the key factors to watch are now international gold prices, the rupee-dollar exchange rate and global interest-rate policy.

Gold may continue to shine as a store of value, but its recent volatility carries an equally important message for Pakistani investors and families:

Even gold can become expensive, unpredictable and highly sensitive to what happens thousands of kilometres away.
